Level 2 Systems

The Level 2 systems provide supervision and coordination between the many independent Level 1 functions.  For example, on a tandem mill, it would track the product on the in-coming conveyor, providing information to the entry coil handling system, the delivery coil handling system, tracking the production of the produced coils, etc.  On the pickling line it would include tracking welded steel coils through the process and issuing setpoint information to the various Level 1 systems as the coil proceeds through the line.  On a continuous annealing line, it would include product tracking, setpoints for the zone temperature control, strip tension setpoints and temper mill setup.

Modeling, such as mill set-up, AGC model dynamic gain, or annealing furnace heating models, are also examples of Level 2 functionality.  Depending upon the size and complexity of the application, there can be one or more Level 2 systems, working together to coordinate the operation of the unit.

Coordination of material movement between units can also be a Level 2 function.  Whether it’s through a system of automatic guided vehicles (AGV), automated storage and retrieval warehousing system (ASRS), or coordinated movement of overhead cranes and transport buggies, tracking material in transit is vital to managing inventory and next unit scheduling.
