Nematron IWS-1511T Emulation/Server

The IPACT Nematron Server is designed to provide a low cost alternate for the discontinued Nematron Series 1000 (IWS-1511T) Industrial Terminal.  Utilizing a standard Windows workstation and a VT340 terminal emulator that supports ReGIS Graphics, the Nematron Server duplicates most of the functionality of the Nematron 1000 Series Terminal.

The Nematron Server serves as a Telnet server between a VT340 terminal emulator and the host computer normally connected to the Nematron Industrial Terminal utilizing a serial port.

Data display requests sent by the host computer are translated by the Nematron Server and relayed to Reflection as standard ANSI escape sequences.  Data input requests recorded in Reflection are captured by the Nematron Server and relayed to the host computer via the serial port.

The Nematron Server supports the following notable features of the Nematron 1000 Terminal.

• 60 key touch screen keypad

• Special character graphics (limited in number due to VT340 emulation)

• Screen file memory

A touch screen PC is not required as mouse clicks within defined screen areas are interpreted the same as screen touches.  However, multiple touch screen venders are available that can be used.  IPACT has tested the Nematron Server with the XYCOM 3515 with the XYCOM 140553 Touch screen.

The Nematron Server functions as a Windows System Tray icon, so as to not interfere with the operator’s interaction with the terminal.  The Nematron Server status window may be opened for trouble shooting to view the serial port data flow moving between the Windows workstation and the host computer.  Serial port data flow may be captured for playback or troubleshooting purposes.  Screen file and touch key definitions are also listed and viewable.

Limitations

There are some short comings in the actual emulation.  The following are items that are not completely supported by the IPACT Nematron Server:

• Double Wide Characters, Double High Character, and Quad high characters- The Nematron had the ability to change the characters on the screen anywhere.  The VT340 emulation requires all characters on a line to all be double wide or double high.  IPACT has chosen to display Double wide characters as a charater plus a space.

• Graphic Characters-  The Nematron has more graphic characters than the number that can be downloaded to the VT340.  A certain number of characters are required for the bar charts but the rest may be programmed by the user to map to those used by the users system.  A method is available to create the characters and to map to the Nematron character set.

• Function keys require configuration in the Reflections terminal session (PC keyboard does not have as many function keys as the Nematron terminal)
