Major New Snack Food Facility

IPACT was selected by a large snack food manufacturer to provide automation for a new facility producing a major new product.  IPACT automated the entire facility except for the self-contained packaging machines, including the following process areas:

  • Nougat Making
  • Caramel making
  • Slab and center forming
  • Chocolate coating
  • Polishing

Integral to the nougat and caramel making process areas was an innovative new flexible Clean-In-Place (CIP) automation system that IPACT designed based on the ISA S88 Batch Control standard.

Technologically, this was a very modern installation, with all of the I/O coming to the PLCs via networks and none-direct wired.  Technologies used included:

  • ControlLogix PLCs
  • InTouch HMIs
  • ControlNet
  • DeviceNet
  • Foundation Fieldbus
  • AS-i (Actuator Sensor Interface)

This was a very substantial project with an aggressive schedule required to support the product launch.  Using our structured analysis/design and simulation methodologies, IPACT was able to deliver the automation portions of the project on or in many cases ahead of schedule, and provide our customer with a system that has proven to be very successful in the field.
