Seamless Pipe Mill

IPACT was chosen to provide MES software for a "greenfield" seamless pipe mill.  The automation was to track products, provide primary input data to processes along the way, and collect process data results.  Tracking acquired the part immediately after hot rolling and followed it through cooling, quenching, one austentizing and two tempering furnaces, a sizing mill, and straightening mill.  Different products could take different paths, bypassing some processes while going through others.  An unique aspect of this project was that it was performed, because of customer specifications, from within a network of ControlLogix PLCs, rather than on a Windows platform employing a "canned" MES software package.  IPACT's engineers rose to the challenge, utilizing the power and flexibility of the ControlLogix processors in order to successfully solve a very demanding technical problem.
