A hot strip mill coil marker system had become problematic for the customer to maintain due to the “black box” nature of the control system, which had been installed by a large European industrial automation firm.  The control system was based on a dedicated microprocessor using machine code programming and could not be readily changed.  Trouble- shooting was difficult for the customer as the only aids from the system were error messages.
