Hot Strip Mill 72 Inch Roll Grinder

An IPACT engineer designed and commissioned an automation system to interface with existing paper tape reader, perform sequencing logic and replace existing constant potential motor controls on a roll grinder. The original constant potential control scheme for the major axes (headstock, wheel and carriage) utilized stick resistors for speed control. These were replaced with a PLC based system for motor sequencing and GE DC-300 DC Drives for speed regulation. A new HMI system allows the operator to develop grinding procedures. These grinding procedures are stored on the HMI hard-drive used by the PLC to determine what grinding functions will be utilized along with the order and duration of their execution.
