Hot Strip Roughing Mill Model Replacement

A South Korean Aluminum Manufacturer contracted IPACT to provide a completely new model for its reversing rougher.  The previous model, supplied by a major mill supplier, was unreliable and unstable, frequently returning different breakdown schedules for the same ingot and finished dimensions, and occasionally failing to return a usable schedule at all.

IPACT worked with the customer to completely understand the requirements and provided a model that fully integrated with the existing mill and edger control.  A simple method to add, change and modify rolling practices made model maintenance easy.  The new model was installed in the spring of 2002, and was fully tuned and operational within 48 hours.  After several months in operation it became apparent that IPACT’s roughing mill model was a resounding success.  Not only were the pass schedules reliable, but fewer passer were required to produce the same product.  As a result the mill productivity increased over 10 percent – an astounding improvement for a single enhancement that did not require any new electrical or mechanical equipment.
