The COROS product line is now obsolete and support for the product by Siemens AG ended on October 1, 2003. Obsolescence of the software product combined with the outdated variety of Intel hardware required to support COROS LS-B were the primary reasons for the replacement effort. This product line has a significant presence in the metals industry in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Solution Overview
Developing the new HMI operator screens was fairly routine for IPACT. The customer had specified Wonderware InTouch as the HMI platform. However, the primary technical challenge was to create a communications interface that would support the legacy COROS/PMC protocols with NO changes in the Level 1 programs.
IPACT studied the PMC protocol details, and created a software Data Access Server that would support the legacy communications requirement.
IPACT’s solution also provides redundancy at the server level, and a companion pseudo-ActiveX object enhances InTouch’s ability to more closely mimic how COROS displays historical alarms.
Customer Benefits
In addition to having a modern HMI platform with which to run the mill, the effective life of the Level 1 system has been extended.
Access to key data for quality and performance analysis was greatly improved by deploying a SQL based historian for replacement of the Index and Measured Value Archiving features of COROS.
IPACT Innovation
IPACT’s ability to unwrap the PMC protocol details and create the communications interface was critical to the project’s success.
